Facing Giants in Life & Work

50 Days of Transformation– Part 7 Career Health

1 SAMUEL 17:1-52

“Now the Philistines had gathered their forces for war...They occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.  A champion named Goliath, from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp.  He was a giant of a man, over nine feet tall, wearing a huge bronze helmet, and a coat of bronze armor that weighed over 125 pounds, He also wore bronze leggings, and slung a huge bronze javelin over his back, The iron spearhead alone weighed 15 pounds, and a soldier with a large shield always walked in front of Goliath.”   vs. 1-7

  1. LESSONS FROM DAVID FACING GOLIATH

  1. THE OTHER ‘GIANTS’ DAVID HAD TO FACE

  1. DELAY: ____________________________________________________________

“Now David was the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons...His three older brothers enlisted in Saul’s army...but David was held back to care for the sheep in Bethlehem.” vs. 12-15

  1. DISCOURAGEMENT: _________________________________________________

“Each day Goliath would stand and shout at the ranks of Israel’s army, ‘Why do you come out here and line up for battle? ...Choose one man to fight me.  If he’s able to kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I kill him, you’ll become our subjects and serve us.’  Day after day Goliath taunted them saying ‘This day I defy the ranks of Israel!’  When Saul and the Israelites heard this, everyone was deeply shaken and paralyzed with fear.”        vs. 8-11…For forty days, twice a day, morning and evening, the Philistine giant loudly berated the Israelite army. vs. 16…“As David talked with his brothers on the front line, he saw Goliath start shouting his usual threats to Israel’s army.  When the army heard Goliath, they all ran away in terror.” vs. 23-24

  1. DISAPPROVAL: ____________________________________________________

“David asked, ‘What’s the reward for killing this Philistine and ending this disgraceful abuse?’...  When David’s older brother heard this he burned with anger at David and said ‘Why are YOU even here anyway?  Why aren’t you taking care of your scrawny little flock of sheep?  You cocky little brat.  I know how conceited you are!’ ‘Now what have I done?’ said David.  ‘Can't I even ask a question?’" vs. 28-29

  1. DOUBT: _____________________________________________________________

“‘Don't worry about a thing,’ David told the King, ‘I'll fight this Philistine!’ ‘Don't be ridiculous!’ Saul replied.  ‘There’s no way YOU can go against this Philistine!  You’re only a boy, and he’s been a professional warrior all his life!’” vs. 32-33

HOW TO DEFEAT GIANTS

  1. ____________________________________________________________________

In protecting my sheep, I’ve killed both a lion and a bear...  The Lord who delivered me from the teeth of that lion, and the claws of that bear, will surely now deliver me from this Philistine too!” vs. 36-37

  1. ____________________________________________________________________

Then Saul dressed David in his own armor...  But David said, ‘I cannot go out in these, because I’m not used to them.’ So he took them off...  Instead he chose 5 smooth stones for his sling.” vs. 38-40

  1. ____________________________________________________________________

“ ...  When others were speaking against him, David encouraged himself in the Lord.”  1 Sam. 30:6

  1. _____________________________________________________________________

“David shouted to Goliath ‘You come at me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty! Today the Lord will conquer you...and the whole world will know that there is a God!  And everyone will know that the Lord doesn’t need weapons to rescue his people.  It is his battle, not ours.  The Lord will give you to us!’” vs. 45-47

Transforming How I See & Use Money

50 Days of Transformation – Part 6 (Financial Health)

Story of the Shrewd Manager: Luke 16:1-13  Jesus said, "There once was a rich man who enlisted a manager to take care of his property.  But the manager was accused of wasting his master’s possessions, so the Owner called him in and said, ‘You must now give me an account of your stewardship and report what you’ve done with what I entrusted to you because your time as a manager is ending!’ The manager thought, 'What am I going to do now?  I’m losing my job but I'm not strong enough to dig ditches and I'm too proud to beg! I know what I'll do - so that after I lose my job, I’ll have plenty of friends to take care of me!’ So he called in everybody who was in debt to his master.  He asked the first man, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ ‘800 gallons of olive oil,” he replied.  The manager said, ‘OK.  Tear up that bill, and write a new bill that says you only owe 400 gallons.  ‘Next, the manager found another debtor and asked, “How much do YOU owe?’ ‘1000 bushels of wheat,’ he replied.  The manager said, “OK, change your bill to say you only own 800.”  Now when the Master heard what the dishonest manager had done, he still praised his shrewdness.  For worldly people are more shrewd in handling their affairs than are those who belong to the light.”

Facing the Fears That Ruin Relationships

50 Days of Transformation - Relational Health (Part 5)

Genesis 3:6-19 “...  so Eve ate some of the fruit.  Then she also gave some to her husband, Adam, who was with her, and he ate it.  Immediately, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness.  So they sewed fig leaves together to cover up themselves.  Then they heard the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from God among the trees.  But God called out to Adam, ‘Where are you?’ Adam replied, ‘I heard you coming and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.’

Then God asked, ‘Who told you that you were naked?  Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?’ Adam said, ‘You gave me this woman and she gave me the fruit, so I ate it.’ Then God said to Eve, ‘Why did you to this?’ Eve replied, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate it.’ ...So God said to Eve, ‘’ (Because you disobeyed me) you’ll have greater trouble in pregnancy and great pain in childbirth.  And though you’ll desire your husband, he’s going to lord it over you."

Then God said to Adam, "Because you also disobeyed me and sinned with your wife, the ground you work is now cursed.  And though you’ll get to eat what you planted, your fields will have weeds, and thorns and thistles, and for the rest of your life you’ll have to sweat and work hard to get your food until you yourself are returned to the dirt that I used to create you.”

HOW TO GET CLOSER TO GOD

50 Days of Transformation - Part 1 (Spiritual Health)

The further away you get from God, the more your life is troubled

The closer you get to God, the more your life is transformed.

THE LOST SON & LOVING FATHER: LUKE 15:11-24

Jesus told this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘Give me my share of your estate now, instead of waiting until you die.’ So his father divided his wealth between his sons.

A few days later the younger son packed all his belongings and left home to live in a distant land. (He got as far away from his Father as he could.) There he squandered the gift he’d been given and wasted his life and money on wild parties and reckless living. About the time all his money ran out, a severe famine hit the land, and he began to starve because he was left with nothing.

The only job he could find was feeding swine on a farm. He became so desperate and hungry that even the pig slop he was feeding the swine looked good to him. But no one would give him anything for his hunger.

When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘This is crazy! At my Father’s home even the lowest paid workers eat well, while I’m far away dying of hunger!  I’m going to return home to my Father and humbly say: Father, I have sinned against both God and you, and I am not worthy to be a part of this family or called your son. But please just make me one of your servants who works for you.’ With that attitude, he headed back home to his Father.

But while the son was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran out to his son, threw his arms around him, and kissed him! The son said ‘Father, I’ve sinned against both God and you, and I’m no longer worthy of being called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring me the finest robe in our house and put it on him. Then get my signet ring for his finger and shoes for his feet. Then roast the calf we have been fattening. We’re going to celebrate with a feast of eating and drinking. For this child of mine was distant and dead but now he’s back and alive! He was lost, but now he’s found! So the party began!’”

  1. ____________________________________________________________________

“...he wasted it all…he had nothing left…he got desperate and hungry…he finally came to his senses...”  Luke 15:13-14, 17
